Students at Whitman who are the most successful socially are those who are willing to engage others and those who try new things. Although it may seem at times that the student body is largely made up of upper middle class, white students, the College is actually in the process of pushing diversity. If you are American, then Walt Whitman is your imaginative father and mother, even if, like myself, you have never composed a line of verse. After suffering a paralytic stroke in earlyWhitman was induced to move from Washington to the home of his brother—George Washington Whitman, an engineer—at Stevens Street in Camden, New Jersey. Whitman's poetry has been set to music by a large number of composers; indeed it has been suggested his poetry has been set to music more than that of any other American poet except for Emily Dickinson and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. As the end of approached, he prepared a final edition of Leaves of Grassa version that has been nicknamed the "Deathbed Edition". At age eleven Whitman concluded formal schooling.
He still had a photograph of her decades later, when he moved to Camden, and he called her "an old sweetheart of mine".

Whitman reportedly enjoyed bathing naked and sunbathing nude. For the most part, students tend to be fairly liberal-leaning politically, and agnostic. Never before did I get so close to Nature; never before did she come so close to me It's time to forget the grudge you had against Whitman, because for one thing, 50 years is long enough to hang onto something, and also, Whitman has done some very wonderful things with gay and lesbian people since I was here. And there are lots of other tidbits that, with a little modern rewording, would be right at home in the pages of a modern men's magazine—or even satirizing modern ideas about manliness because they're so over the top. How Whitman could have been so prejudiced, and yet so effective in conveying an egalitarian and antiracist sensibility in his poetry, is a puzzle yet to be adequately addressed.
Students at Whitman are predominantly white and from Washington or Oregon. In the past few years, Whitman has made an effort to bring more racial and socio-economic diversity to the student body, and diversity continues to grow on campus.
